Soft, chubby bliss...
We've filled the Norrag rest mats with kapok (pronounced kay pok), which is a beautifully soft, cloud like fibre that grows in abundance near Catriona’s @studiotolsta in India. Harvested from the pods of the Ceiba tree, which is often called the Tree of Life, kapok holds deep symbolism across cultures. The ancient Maya saw the Ceiba as a bridge between heaven, earth and the underworld - a sacred link between realms. In West African folklore the kapok tree is seen as a symbol of resilience and spiritual growth.
The seed fibres of the kapok pod resemble silk and cotton and are so soft. It’s the kapok which gives our mats their signature chubby softness and buoyancy. Before synthetic foams existed, kapok was nature’s own filling for mattresses, cushions and soft toys and it’s long been celebrated for its comfort, resilience and gentle support.
I wanted to create a mat that felt comforting and practical, so something rollable for class and easy to store at home or at work. Catriona and her team experimented with different thicknesses until they found the perfect balance of chubbiness and rollability. The result is a mat that feels like a complete upgrade from a traditional yoga mat when it comes to resting and relaxing and it’s beautifully soft, breathable and grounding.
